Looking Ahead
Who will rise to the top of each weight class in 2009 depends on weight growth and movement in the lower weights and who decides to step up in the upper weights, where most top spots have been vacated due to graduation. And, those few in the new freshman class who are set to take on the challenge.

Those who will be most prepared to fill in the gaps are the handful of dedicated wrestlers continuing to compete in the off-season.

Returning non-State Qualifiers/Placers to Watch
At the top of those to watch who failed to make State would be Cody Pack of Quincy (North Section) and Jake Briggs of Bella Vista (Sac-J). Pack sported a 31-1 record before taking ill and missing the Sacramento Valley League Finals. Now back to good health and in form, Pack recently won the Reno Worlds at 108 lbs. Whether he goes at 103, 112 or 119, Cody Pack will be a wrestler to be reckoned with in 2009.    Cont...

Shane Tate of Oakdale (Sac-J) was remarkable among the 2008 freshmen State Qualifiers, in a stacked weight class (112 lbs). Knocked out of the Championship bracket by Lemoore's AJ Jaramillo (5th), Tate finished 3-2. His other loss was to Peter Gonzalez of S. Bakersfield (6th). A 16-5 win over Buena Park's Santy Rodriguez stood out among his three wins. Should he hold weight at 112 lbs, Tate will be among the top ranked wrestlers, however, we are quick to note that six of the eight placers at 112 lbs will return in 2009, including State Champion David Klingsheim, although it is unlikely that all will remain at that weight.     Cont...

Returning Champions...
Four Champions return in 2009. All will be Seniors. David Klingsheim (Liberty), Martin Gonzalez (Gilroy), Vlad Dombroski (Natomas) and Roger McCovey (Del Norte) hope to close out their high school careers as repeat State Champions.     Cont...
